James L Karl received his Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science Engineering from Purdue University in May of 1981 a Master of Science in Material Science Engineering from the University of Vermont in 1986. Immediately following graduation from Purdue Mr. Karl joined IBM at their Essex Junction, Vermont facility, and continued to work out of that location until his retirement in June of 2011.
During his 30 year career at IBM Mr. Karl has held numerous engineering and management positions throughout the Microelectronics Division’s development and manufacturing organizations. Most recently Mr. Karl was the Client Executive for IBM Microelectronics’ Aerospace and Defense business. In this role he was primarily responsible for managing IBM Microelectronics business with the US Government and IBM Microelectronics’ commercial A&D clients. Mr. Karl was responsible for establishing IBM Microelectronics Trusted manufacturing capability in Essex Junction in 2003 and managed the growth and expansion of the Trusted Foundry program throughout IBM Microelectronics until his departure in 2010.
Mr. Karl is also principal consultant for Idea-Ore Consulting. Idea-Ore provides consulting services for the US Aerospace, Defense and Intelligence communities related to secure development and manufacturing of semiconductor components.
Throughout his career Mr. Karl maintained an active relationship with Purdue University and the Purdue Alumni Association. For many years Mr. Karl was IBM Microelectronics’ technical recruiting lead at Purdue. He routinely returned to campus to speak and mentor students about his experiences and the engineering profession. Mr. . Karl was named Purdue University’s Outstanding Materials Science engineer in 1998 and has served on the Material Science Engineering Advisory Board. Recently Mr. Karl completed a six year term as an Officer for the Board of Directors of the Purdue Alumni Association, serving as Chairman of the Board from 2007 to 2009.
Currently Mr. Karl and his wife Barbara reside in West Lafayette, Indiana where he enjoys living out as his passion for his alma mater while serving as Executive Vice President of the Purdue Alumni Association. Their daughter Christina is a senior in Purdue’s Chemical Engineering Program.
